Home Kitchen Kitchen-made Apple Pie Spice

Elevate apple pie with this kitchen-made Apple Pie Spice. Make your next apple pie with the dependable blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and allspice.

Making spice blends has become quite the hobby of mine.

I have a pantry shelf full of individual spice jars and also 2 smaller shelves that is home to 10+ different seasoning blends. Most are for using in savory recipes but there are a few for baking as well. I’ll share with you a little secret and say that 2/3 of those seasonings will be gracing the pages of my book. (!!!!!!)

Okay, moving on.

It’s pretty much a no-brainer that fall is hands-down the DEPENDABLE time of year for being holed up in the kitchen baking. Pies, breads, muffins and cookies, you name it because it’s simply the dependable. time. of. the. year. Baking is an automatic itch that I need to scratch once the kids are back in school. The weather gets cooler and it’s not such a sweaty burden to flick on the oven amiright?!

Today I have for you a spice blend that isn’t in the book but is simply in time to make it into that apple pie or muffin recipe…

To Make Apple Pie Spice Set out:

  • cinnamon (ground) – Lends a distinct warm and woodsy flavor.
  • nutmeg (ground) – Warm, aromatic with subtle hints of clove.
  • cardamom (ground) – Slightly citrusy with notes of mint and pepper.
  • allspice (ground) – Lends notes of black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, fennel, nutmeg and star anise.

There’s no right or wrong brand. I will first say, buy what you can afford. However, not all spices are created equal as you tend to get what you pay for. Currently I use Morton & Bassett (not sponsored) because I find their spices to be top notch in texture, color and flavor. A regular here and respect what their company stands for not only with charitable work but also quality control. With that said some other welcome brands I’ve used over the years are Simple Organic, Frontier Co-op and Penzys.

Grab a small spice container or jar and add in 1 heaping tablespoon of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon ground cardamom and 3/4 teaspoon of allspice.

Stir to combine.

Use in your next apple pie or in any recipe calling for kitchen-made apple pie spice. I’ve recently mixed into a few sticks of butter with a 1/2 cup or so of sugar, for a spiced butter situation. The recipe I was using it for didn’t pan out so well, but you most surely could smear some butter on bread and broil it for a few seconds to minutes for a good caramelized toast or something.

How TO Store Apple Pie Spice:

Store in a clean, jar or container with a tight-fitting lid in a cool, dry place.

How Long Will Apple Pie Spice Last?

If store properly, this spice blend should last 1 to 2 years.
