Who here is not a fan of canned enchilada sauce?
*raises both hands*
I have said it before, canned enchilada sauce is not something I buy, ever. I’ve made my own or found an alternative wayThat’s why I made this in a home kitchen version a few years ago. But I don’t always have time to roast tomatoes, toast spices and puree. Making true, in a home kitchen enchilada sauce is time consuming. Roast tomatoes, sauté onions and toast spices… then puree. It’s savory, simply not as simple as 15 minutes.
It was time to come up with a enchilada red sauce that took lest time, so this is my semi-from-scratch shortcut version. A flavor-packed 15-minute enchilada sauce.
I’m in the process of testing a few enchilada recipes (eep!) and wanted an short and unfussy enchilada sauce to go with it. I kind of threw this together and jotted it down in my notebook as I went. I loved how the spices meld perfectly and the aroma of the sauce while it simmers away on my stove. It’s unfussy-peasy and fifteen minutes is all you need.
What you get with this 15-minute enchilada sauce is a simple, robust and savory sauce. Everything you would want in an enchilada sauce. I simmer tomato puree, not to be confused with tomato sauce, with chicken broth and dried herbs and spices like garlic and onion powder, chipotle powder, cumin, oregano and salt. This sauce is so unfussy you’ll never buy store bought again. Feel free to use wherever you need enchilada sauce.
I’ve used it in a summer vegetable breakfast skilletand have a few recipes I’m going to try. Besides enchiladas, what else do you like to use enchilada sauce in? I would loved to know!
