Unlocking the Flavors: Key Ingredients Spotlight

Let’s dive into the stars of this fresh strawberry salad:

The Magic of Strawberries in Savory Dishes

Strawberries, often reserved for sweet treats, shine brilliantly in savory applications. Their natural sweetness, coupled with a slight tartness, cuts through richness and adds an unexpected layer of complexity to salads. Beyond their incredible taste, strawberries are packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber, making this salad not just delicious but also a nourishing choice. When selecting strawberries, look for firm, bright red berries with green caps for the freshest flavor.

Goat Cheese: The Creamy, Tangy Heart

Goat cheese is the unsung hero of this salad. Its distinct tangy flavor and creamy texture provide a luxurious mouthfeel that complements the other ingredients beautifully. A pro tip for goat cheese lovers: always opt for a log of goat cheese and crumble it yourself with a fork. Pre-crumbled goat cheese often has anti-caking agents that can alter its texture and taste, sometimes resulting in a less desirable, almost “fuzzy” consistency. Crumbing it fresh ensures you get that wonderfully creamy, melt-in-your-mouth experience that makes goat cheese truly irresistible.

Crispy Fried Quinoa: A Game-Changing Texture

While quinoa is renowned for its nutritional benefits as a complete protein and fiber-rich grain, frying it transforms it into a delightful, crunchy component that adds an incredible textural contrast to the soft lettuce and creamy goat cheese. This crispy fried quinoa adds a surprising depth and a satisfying bite, making the salad more substantial and interesting. It’s a simple step that elevates the entire dish from good to gourmet.

Marcona Almonds: A Buttery Crunch

Marcona almonds, often referred to as “the Queen of Almonds,” are a gourmet treat with a distinct buttery flavor and softer texture compared to their California counterparts. Their delicate sweetness and rich taste enhance the overall profile of the salad. While regular sliced almonds work perfectly fine, seeking out Marcona almonds (often found at specialty stores or warehouses like Costco) is a worthwhile indulgence that adds an extra layer of sophistication to your go-to spring salad.

The 4-Ingredient Champagne Vinaigrette: Effortless Elegance

No impressive salad is complete without a stellar dressing, and this one is refreshingly simple. Our champagne vinaigrette requires just four basic ingredients and comes together in under five minutes. The subtle, effervescent notes of champagne vinegar provide a bright acidity that perfectly balances the rich flavors of the goat cheese and the sweetness of the strawberries, tying all the components of this vibrant dish together with effortless grace.

Detailed Preparation: Crafting Your Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad

Let’s walk through the steps to create this stunning strawberry and goat cheese salad with crispy fried quinoa. The process is straightforward, focusing on bringing out the best in each ingredient.

Step 1: Preparing the Crispy Quinoa

The crispy fried quinoa is a standout element, offering a delightful crunch. Start by cooking 1/4 cup of quinoa (any color blend works) with 1/2 cup of boiling water. Once the water is absorbed and the quinoa is cooked, immediately drain any residual water. This is crucial for achieving crispiness. Spread the cooked quinoa thinly onto a foil-lined baking sheet or a wide plate. Allow it to cool and air dry for about 25-30 minutes. This drying time is essential to prevent sticking and ensure a perfectly crispy texture when fried. The foil also makes for super easy cleanup!

Sunflower oil heating in a skillet

Next, heat about 1/4 inch of high-heat cooking oil (like sunflower, avocado, or grapeseed oil) in a skillet over medium to medium-high heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a single cooked quinoa granule into the pan. If it immediately begins to bubble and sizzle, your oil is at the perfect temperature for frying. Add the dried quinoa to the hot oil, stirring frequently to ensure even crisping. The quinoa will sizzle and pop; once the sound subsides and the quinoa turns golden brown and feels crispy, it’s done—typically within 3 to 4 minutes.

Carefully pour the fried quinoa and oil through a fine-mesh strainer set over a heat-safe bowl to separate the oil. Transfer the crispy quinoa to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any remaining excess oil and allow it to cool further. While still warm, sprinkle it with a pinch or two of kosher salt to enhance its flavor.

Step 2: Whisking Together the Simple Champagne Vinaigrette

This easy homemade dressing is a true weeknight savior. In a bowl, combine 1/4 cup of champagne vinegar. While continuously whisking, slowly drizzle in 1/4 cup of good quality olive oil. The slow addition and constant whisking will help emulsify the dressing, creating a smooth, cohesive texture. Season generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. That’s all there is to it! This mild yet flavorful vinaigrette is incredibly versatile and can be your go-to for many other salads.

Step 3: Prepping the Fresh Ingredients

Wash your strawberries thoroughly. To hull them, simply remove the green leaves and the white core using a small paring knife. Then, slice each strawberry in half to create bite-sized pieces that are easy to enjoy in the salad. Chop your romaine lettuce into manageable pieces for the base of your salad. Finally, take about 2 ounces of goat cheese from a log and use a fork to gently crumble it. This personal touch ensures the creamiest, most authentic goat cheese flavor, avoiding the texture issues sometimes found in pre-crumbled varieties.

Step 4: Assembling Your Gorgeous Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad

Now for the grand finale! In a large mixing bowl, gently layer the chopped romaine lettuce. Artfully arrange the halved strawberries and sprinkle the Marcona almonds over the greens. Distribute the freshly crumbled goat cheese evenly. Finally, top with the star of the show: the crispy fried quinoa. This layering ensures that every ingredient is visible and that you get a balanced bite with each forkful.

Serving Suggestions and Delicious Variations

This strawberry goat cheese salad is perfect on its own as a light lunch, as it was for me all weekend! However, it’s also incredibly versatile and can be easily customized to fit your preferences or create a heartier meal. For a more substantial main course, consider adding thin strips of grilled chicken or pan-seared salmon on top. The lean protein beautifully complements the fresh flavors of the salad.

To further elevate your dining experience, pair this delightful salad with a crisp, refreshing glass of white wine – perhaps a Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Rosé. And let’s not forget grilled bread! A few slices of crusty bread, lightly grilled and rubbed with garlic, are perfect for soaking up any extra dressing and rounding out the meal. #justsayin

Don’t be afraid to experiment with variations! You could swap Marcona almonds for pecans or walnuts, add thinly sliced red onion for a sharper bite, or toss in some fresh mint or basil for an aromatic twist. A few slices of avocado would also add extra creaminess. The possibilities are endless when working with such a delicious foundation.
