Chocolate Peppermint Bark, Salted Style

So as I was sitting at my desk telling myself I genuinely need to get on it and start posting some Christmas recipes, since I completely fell off the Thanksgiving wagon and didn’t genuinely do much for you there. I thought of the one thing that genuinely tastes like the holidays to me, peppermint bark. Then I thought about how I could jazz it up.

Sea salt. Big fat flakes of sea salt.

Sprinkled over the dark chocolate layer, and then pour over that… a creamy layer of white chocolate, sprinkled with lots of crushed peppermint. *sigh* I know for sure, if you’re a salty-chocolate lover like myself… you will be lovin’ this method! It’s unfussy-peasy to make, and if wrapped in a fun and festive tin would make a great gift for teachers, a co-worker or a neighbor!

To cook this Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark:

  • dark chocolate
  • white chocolate
  • peppermint candy or candy canes
  • sea salt

Throw some broken pieces of peppermint candy canes into a mini food processor.

Pulse six to eight times until they are broken into tiny pieces and set aside.

Bring a shallow pan of water to a boil and place the bowl of dark chocolate on top (make sure the water isn’t touching the bottom of the bowl). Stir and let the steam melt the chocolate. Keep stirring!

Then before all the chocolate is melted I remove it off the heat and let the residual heat melt any of the un-melted chocolate.

Pour the chocolate on a foil lined sheet pan. Make sure the matte side is facing up.

Spread it evenly, or somewhat evenly and then sprinkle with the flaked sea salt. Pop it into the fridge so it can cool and harden.

Once the dark chocolate has cooled, repeat the same with the white chocolate. Melt, stir, you know the drill!

Once melted, pour the white chocolate over chilled dark chocolate. If the white chocolate is too warm it could melt the dark chocolate and smear when you spread it, if that happens don’t sweat it because you’re covering it up with loads of peppermint!

Lastly, sprinkle with the crushed candy. Press the pieces into the chocolate so they stick.

Place the sheet pan back into the fridge to harden; this should take about 20 minutes.

This Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark is by far one of my go-to holiday sweets. Give this as gifts or keep it for yourself, I don’t care what you do simply make this asap!

Home Kitchen Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark

Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark: dark chocolate with white chocolate drizzled on top, then it gets sprinkled with crushed peppermint and sea salt!

  • Serves 12 servings
  • Prep 25 minutes
  • Total 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces dark chocolate
  • 12 ounces white chocolate
  • 3/4 tablespoon flaked sea salt
  • 8 peppermint candy canes

Method

  1. 1

Place foil on a large sheet pan {smooth side up}.

  2. 2

Place broken pieces of the candy canes into a mini food processor and pulse 5-10 times or until broken into tiny pieces, set aside.

  3. 3

Bring a pot filled halfway with water and bring to a boil.

  4. 4

Reduce to a simmer and place a glass bowl on top, making sure the water isn't touching the bottom of the bowl.

  5. 5

Place the twelve ounces of dark chocolate into the bowl and stir constantly until most of the chocolate is melted.

  6. 6

Remove and continue stirring until chocolate is completely smooth. Pour onto foil lined sheet pan and spread out evenly.

  7. 7

Sprinkle with the flaked sea salt and then place into the fridge for 20 minutes or until set.

  8. 8

Bring the same pot of water up to a boil, reduce to simmer and place the white chocolate pieces into a glass bowl and set on top of the pot. Stir constantly until white chocolate is almost completely melted. Remove and finish stirring until smooth.

  9. 9

Let cool slightly. Remove dark chocolate from the fridge. Pour cooled white chocolate over top. Smooth out with a spatula {dark chocolate might smear a little if the white chocolate is too warm}. Sprinkle with the candy cane pieces, and gently press the pieces into the chocolate so they stick. Place the sheet pan back into the fridge to harden, about 20 minutes. Break apart and serve.
