Plus, the sheer fun of eating “pasta chips” makes them a fantastic conversation starter and a hit with both kids and adults.

Essential Ingredients for Your Pasta Chip Adventure
Creating these delightful air fryer pasta chips and their accompanying creamy pesto dip requires a few simple, readily available ingredients. The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility, allowing for substitutions based on your preferences or what you have on hand. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:
- Fine Sea Salt: Essential for seasoning the pasta water, adding flavor from the very beginning.
- Bowtie Pasta (Farfalle): While any medium-sized pasta works, farfalle’s unique shape makes it perfect for scooping up dips and provides a fun, visually appealing “chip.” We’ll need 6 ounces of dried pasta.
- Cream Cheese: The base for our irresistibly creamy dip. Make sure it’s at room temperature for easy blending.
- Milk: A small amount helps achieve the perfect smooth consistency for the pesto dip.
- Basil Pesto: The star flavor of our dip. Whether homemade (perhaps from a batch you’ve frozen, like mine!) or store-bought, quality pesto makes all the difference.
- Olive Oil: Extra light olive oil is preferred for coating the pasta, helping it crisp up in the air fryer.
- Garlic Powder: A foundational spice that adds savory depth to the pasta chips.
- Italian Seasoning: A fragrant blend of dried herbs that elevates the overall flavor profile.
- Kosher Salt: For seasoning the pasta before air frying. Adjust to your taste.
- Black Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper adds a touch of subtle spice.
- Pecorino Romano Cheese: This sharp, salty Italian cheese adds an incredible umami boost and contributes to the chips’ golden crisp. Parmesan cheese is a fantastic alternative if you prefer a milder flavor or have it readily available.
- Marinara: A warm, classic dip that perfectly complements the crispy pasta chips. Homemade is always a treat, but a good quality store-bought marinara works wonderfully.

While we specifically recommend farfalle (bowtie) pasta for its ideal shape and dipping capability, feel free to experiment with other medium-sized pasta varieties like penne, rotini, or even rigatoni. The key is to choose a shape that provides enough surface area for seasoning and can stand up to the air frying process without becoming too brittle or crumbly. For this recipe, you will need approximately 6 ounces of dried pasta, which typically yields a good snack-sized batch.
Crafting the Perfect Creamy Pesto Dip
The creamy pesto dip is a game-changer, adding a fresh, herbaceous counterpoint to the savory pasta chips. It’s surprisingly simple to prepare and can be made ahead of time, making your snack assembly a breeze.

Start by taking 4 ounces of cream cheese out of the refrigerator well in advance, allowing it to reach room temperature. This crucial step ensures a smooth, lump-free dip. Once softened, transfer the cream cheese to a mixing bowl and use a hand mixer to beat it until it’s light, fluffy, and all clumps have disappeared. This initial whipping creates an airy base for our dip.

Next, pour in 1 tablespoon of milk. Continue mixing with the hand mixer until the mixture becomes wonderfully smooth and creamy. The milk helps to loosen the cream cheese, creating a more dippable consistency.

Now, it’s time for the star flavor: the pesto. Add 2 tablespoons of basil pesto to the cream cheese mixture. If you’ve got homemade pesto on hand, perhaps from a batch you previously made and froze (like the author’s handy 2-tablespoon cubes!), thaw it first. The fresh, vibrant flavor of basil pesto perfectly complements the richness of the cream cheese.

Using a rubber spatula, gently fold the basil pesto into the cream cheese mixture until it’s evenly incorporated. Avoid overmixing to maintain the dip’s light and airy texture. Once combined, cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip until you’re ready to serve. Chilling allows the flavors to meld beautifully and ensures a refreshing, cool dip alongside your warm pasta chips.
Mastering Your Air Fryer Pasta Chips
The journey to crispy pasta chips begins with perfectly cooked pasta and a flavorful seasoning blend, culminating in the transformative power of the air fryer.

Cooking the Pasta to Perfection
To start, bring a medium pot of water to a rolling boil. You don’t need an oversized pasta pot; a 2.5-quart pot should be ample for 6 ounces of pasta. Once the water is vigorously boiling, stir in a small palmful (approximately 1 tablespoon) of fine sea salt. This salts the water, infusing flavor into the pasta from within. Add your pasta and cook it to an al dente consistency, precisely according to the package directions. Achieving al dente is crucial: the pasta should be firm to the bite, not mushy, as it will continue to cook slightly in the air fryer. Overcooked pasta will become brittle or stick together, while undercooked pasta won’t crisp up properly.
Once the pasta is cooked, immediately drain it thoroughly in a colander, shaking off as much excess water as possible. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness, so ensure your pasta is as dry as possible before moving to the next step.

Seasoning for Maximum Flavor
Transfer the drained pasta to a spacious mixing bowl. Now, it’s time to unleash the flavor. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil over the pasta, followed by 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Add a generous pinch of kosher salt (about ¼ teaspoon, or to taste) and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper. For those who enjoy a little heat, a ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes is a fantastic addition, providing a subtle kick that enhances the overall experience.

Using a rubber spatula or your hands, thoroughly mix and coat the pasta in the oil and spices. Ensure every piece of pasta is evenly covered, as this seasoning blend is what will create those irresistible flavors and help achieve that golden crust in the air fryer.

Finally, measure out ⅓ cup of freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese. Freshly grated cheese melts and crisps better than pre-shredded varieties, offering a superior flavor and texture. If Pecorino Romano isn’t available, grated Parmesan cheese makes an excellent substitute.

Add the cheese to the seasoned pasta and toss it one last time, ensuring the cheese is well distributed. The cheese will not only add a wonderful savory note but also contribute to the beautiful golden-brown color and crispy texture of the pasta chips.

The Magic of the Air Fryer: What It Is and Why It’s Healthier
Before you begin air frying, it’s essential to preheat your appliance. Set your air fryer to 390°F or 400°F (approximately 200°C), depending on your specific make and model. Proper preheating ensures even cooking and consistent crispiness.

What Exactly is an Air Fryer and Why Use It?
An air fryer is a versatile countertop appliance that utilizes rapid hot air circulation to cook food, mimicking the results of deep frying with significantly less oil. Think of it as a super-powered convection oven in a compact form. A powerful fan circulates hot air around the food at high speeds, creating a convection effect that quickly browns and crisps the exterior of items, from vegetables and meats to, yes, even pasta!
The primary advantage of an air fryer is its ability to produce incredibly crispy food with only a fraction of the oil traditionally used in deep frying – often just a light spray or a tablespoon. This innovative cooking method allows you to enjoy the satisfying crunch and texture of your favorite fried foods without the excess fat and calories associated with submerging items in a vat of hot oil. My husband, after extensive research, found this air fryer to be one of the best on the market. However, there are numerous makes and models available, so researching and choosing one that best suits your lifestyle and cooking needs is always recommended.
The Health Benefits of Air Frying
Air frying offers substantial health benefits, making it an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy delicious, crispy food while being mindful of their dietary intake. By requiring only a thin layer of oil to coat the food, the hot circulating air crisps the exterior beautifully, locking in flavor without absorbing excessive fat. This drastically reduces the calorie and fat content compared to traditional deep-frying methods.
It’s important to remember that not all air fryers are created equal. Some models feature a preheat function, while others do not. Basket sizes also vary considerably; smaller air fryers may require you to cook your pasta chips in multiple, smaller batches to ensure proper air circulation and even crisping. Overcrowding the basket will lead to steamed pasta, not crispy chips! Always check your specific air fryer’s manual for optimal temperature and timing guidelines. Air Frying for Maximum Crunch
Once your air fryer has reached its preheated temperature, lightly spray the inside of the basket with a nonstick cooking spray. This helps prevent the pasta from sticking and ensures easy removal. Carefully add the seasoned pasta to the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd it. Arrange the pasta in a single layer as much as possible to allow for optimal air circulation. If necessary, cook in batches.
Lightly spray the pasta itself with a bit more nonstick spray or a touch of olive oil, then air fry for an initial 2 minutes.

After the first 2 minutes, gently shake the basket to redistribute the pasta. This ensures all sides get exposed to the hot air. Continue air frying in 2-minute increments, shaking the basket between each interval, until the pasta chips are beautifully golden brown and wonderfully crispy. For my air fryer, this process typically takes around 8 minutes. However, air fryer models vary significantly, so it’s essential to keep a watchful eye on your pasta chips to prevent burning. Look for a deep golden color and a firm, crunchy texture.

Serving Suggestions and Delicious Pairings
Once your Air Fryer Pasta Chips have achieved peak crispiness, immediately transfer them to a serving bowl. They are best enjoyed warm, straight from the air fryer. The fresh crunch and savory flavors are truly irresistible when hot. Alongside your pasta chips, present the chilled creamy pesto dip and a small bowl of warm marinara sauce. The combination of the cool, herbaceous pesto and the rich, warm marinara offers a delightful contrast in both temperature and flavor, enhancing the overall snacking experience.

Look how incredibly crispy these turned out! The light, airy crunch makes them incredibly satisfying.
Beyond the recommended dips, don’t hesitate to explore other pairing possibilities. Imagine dipping these crispy delights into a spicy arrabiata sauce, a tangy ranch dressing, a creamy hummus, or even a warm cheese sauce for an extra indulgent treat. A sprinkle of fresh parsley or a dash of grated Parmesan just before serving can also add a nice touch. These pasta chips are perfect as a standalone snack, a unique appetizer for parties, or a fun addition to a charcuterie board. No matter how you serve them, the motto remains the same: Dip. Eat. Repeat.
