Peach Prosciutto and Burrata Sandwich - A gourmet summer delight with creamy burrata, salty prosciutto, and sweet peaches

The Quintessential Summer Sandwich: Why You’ll Crave This Combination

There are sandwiches, and then there are experiences. This Peach Prosciutto and Burrata Sandwich firmly falls into the latter category. It’s more than just a meal; it’s a celebration of vibrant seasonal produce and classic Italian flavors, all wrapped up in a convenient, hand-held package. We boldly declare this to be the sandwich of the summer, and for good reason.

Its allure begins with the foundation: a perfectly chosen baguette. While many breads could work, the crisp crust and soft, airy interior of a good baguette (like the surprisingly excellent ones found at Costco) provides the ideal textural contrast to the soft fillings. From there, the magic truly unfolds with an orchestra of ingredients: creamy burrata melting slightly at room temperature, sun-ripened peach slices bursting with natural sweetness, peppery arugula adding a refreshing bite, fragrant fresh basil offering an herbaceous counterpoint, and the unmistakable, savory saltiness of prosciutto. Each component is carefully selected to create a symphony of tastes and sensations – a true cacophony of flavors and textures that is absolutely heavenly! This sandwich is a testament to the fact that sometimes, the simplest ingredients, when combined thoughtfully, can create the most extraordinary dishes.

What makes this particular combination so outstanding is its versatility and effortless elegance. It’s wonderfully simple enough to whip up for an impromptu picnic on a sunny afternoon, yet undeniably impressive enough to serve at a small gathering or casual dinner party. Moreover, it’s simply perfect for those moments when you’re in the mood for something truly special, something that transcends the everyday lunch and feels like a gourmet treat without any fuss. It requires minimal cooking – just a quick toast of the bread – making it an ideal choice for hot summer days when you want to avoid turning on the oven.

Unveiling the Flavor Profile: Sweet, Salty, Creamy, and Tangy

Every element in this sandwich plays a crucial role in its complex yet balanced flavor profile. The sweet and juicy peaches provide a refreshing contrast to the savory, umami-rich prosciutto. The burrata, with its soft exterior and creamy, stracciatella-filled center, acts as a luxurious canvas, mellowing the stronger flavors and adding a delightful richness. A drizzle of tangy balsamic glaze cuts through the richness and enhances the sweetness of the peaches, while a touch of hot honey introduces an exciting sweet-spicy kick that elevates the entire experience. Fresh basil leaves infuse a clean, aromatic note, and baby arugula contributes a pleasant, peppery bitterness, preventing the sandwich from being overly sweet or heavy. Together, these ingredients create a multi-dimensional taste sensation that is truly addictive.

Essential Ingredients for Your Peach Prosciutto and Burrata Sandwich

Crafting this extraordinary sandwich requires a thoughtful selection of fresh, high-quality ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need to assemble this summer sensation, along with some tips for choosing the best components:

  • Baguette: A fresh, crusty baguette is paramount for the perfect texture. I often reach for a Costco baguette because it offers excellent quality and value, developing a wonderfully golden exterior when toasted. Its sturdy structure holds up beautifully to the generous fillings. For an alternative, a good ciabatta or a rustic sourdough loaf would also be delicious.
  • Salted Butter: A small amount of salted butter is essential for achieving that irresistible golden-brown crust and imparting a subtle richness to the toasted baguette. It helps the bread crisp up perfectly in the skillet.
  • Burrata: This creamy Italian cheese is the heart of the sandwich. For optimal spreadability and flavor, remember to set your burrata out on the counter at least 20 to 30 minutes before you plan to use it. Bringing it to room temperature allows its luscious, creamy interior to soften beautifully, making it easier to spread and enhancing its overall melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • Freshly Ground Black Pepper: A simple seasoning, yet it adds a distinct bite and aromatic flavor that beautifully complements the other ingredients, cutting through the sweetness and richness. Always use freshly ground for the best impact.
  • Balsamic Glaze: This sticky, sweet, and tangy reduction is a flavor powerhouse. It lends a wonderful acidity and sweetness that balances the saltiness of the prosciutto and the richness of the burrata. You can easily make your own homemade balsamic glaze by simmering balsamic vinegar until reduced, or opt for a good quality store-bought version for convenience.
  • Prosciutto: The star of the cured meats, prosciutto offers a delicate, salty, and savory flavor with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Its thin slices add a sophisticated touch. I particularly love Murray’s Prosciutto di Parma for its exceptional quality and flavor.
  • Peach: The sweetness and juiciness of the peach are key to this sandwich. Choose ripe (but not overly ripe) white or yellow flesh peaches. A ripe peach will yield slightly to gentle pressure and have a fragrant aroma. Avoid overly soft peaches, which can make the sandwich too wet.
  • Honey: A drizzle of honey adds another layer of sweetness. I prefer hot honey for its intriguing sweet-spicy kick, which provides an exciting contrast. However, if you prefer a milder flavor, regular honey works just as well and is equally delicious.
  • Fresh Basil: These vibrant green leaves add a pop of bright, herbaceous freshness and a lovely aroma that instantly transports you to the Mediterranean. Don’t skimp on the fresh herbs!
  • Baby Arugula: This leafy green contributes a delightful slightly bitter and peppery note, adding another layer of complex flavor and a crisp texture to the sandwich. Its vibrant green color also makes the sandwich visually appealing.

Buttering a sliced baguette for toasting

Step-by-Step Assembly: Crafting Your Perfect Sandwich

Creating this gourmet sandwich is surprisingly straightforward. Follow these steps for a perfectly balanced and incredibly delicious result:

First, prepare your baguette. Carefully trim off the ends, which are often tougher, and then slice the baguette in half lengthwise. Next, carefully cut each half horizontally, creating four bread slices. Evenly spread a generous amount of salted butter on the cut side of each baguette piece. This butter will not only add flavor but also ensure a beautiful golden-brown crust when toasted.

Toasting buttered baguette slices in a skillet until golden

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the buttered baguette slices, butter side down, into the skillet. Toast them for 2-3 minutes, or until they achieve a gorgeous golden-brown hue and become wonderfully crispy. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning. Once toasted, remove them from the skillet and repeat the process with any remaining halves until all bread is perfectly golden.

Perfectly toasted baguette slices ready for assembly

Once all your baguette pieces are toasted, arrange them toasted-side up on a clean work surface. This ensures that the crispy side is facing outwards, preventing sogginess and providing a satisfying crunch.

Spreading creamy burrata onto the toasted baguette halves

Now for the star cheese! Top both bottom halves of the baguette with burrata. If using larger balls, you might use one per half; if using smaller, opt for two. Carefully slice open the burrata balls and gently spread the creamy, luscious cheese to evenly cover the surface of the bread. The goal is to get that rich, milky interior distributed across the toasted baguette.

NOTE: As mentioned before, ensure your burrata has been resting at room temperature for at least 20 minutes. This allows the internal stracciatella to soften and become delightfully spreadable, making for a much better texture in your sandwich.

Seasoning burrata with black pepper, balsamic glaze, and prosciutto

Next, generously season the creamy burrata with freshly ground black pepper. This simple addition makes a significant difference in balancing the flavors. Then, artfully drizzle a generous amount of balsamic glaze over the burrata. The tang and sweetness of the glaze will beautifully complement the cheese and upcoming ingredients. Finally, layer the delicate slices of prosciutto over the glazed burrata, allowing its salty, savory notes to intermingle.

Adding peach slices and hot honey to the sandwich layers

Now for the burst of freshness: arrange the succulent peach slices over the prosciutto. Their vibrant color and sweet juiciness are essential. Once the peaches are in place, drizzle with hot honey (or regular honey, if you prefer). The subtle heat of hot honey adds an exciting dimension that really makes this sandwich sing.

Finishing the sandwich with fresh basil and arugula

Lastly, pile on the fresh basil leaves and a generous handful of baby arugula. These greens add a final touch of brightness, a fresh aroma, and a slight peppery crunch that ties all the flavors together beautifully.

Carefully replace the top half of the baguette onto each assembled sandwich. For easier eating and serving, cut each large sandwich in half once more, yielding a total of four perfectly portioned, irresistible sandwiches.

Serving Suggestions and Pairing Perfection

This Peach Prosciutto and Burrata Sandwich is substantial enough to be a meal on its own, but it also pairs wonderfully with a variety of sides. For a light and refreshing accompaniment, serve it with additional fresh fruit like melon or berries, or a simple side salad with a light vinaigrette. Crudités (cut veggies) or a handful of your favorite potato chips also make excellent, easy additions, providing an extra crunch.

Consider pairing this sandwich with a crisp, dry white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, or a light rosé for an elevated dining experience. For non-alcoholic options, sparkling water with a slice of lemon or a glass of unsweetened iced tea would be perfect. Whether you’re hosting a casual brunch, packing a sophisticated picnic, or enjoying a leisurely lunch, this sandwich promises to be a delightful centerpiece.

Peach Prosciutto and Burrata Sandwich

In this Peach Prosciutto and Burrata Sandwich, creamy burrata, balsamic glaze, salty prosciutto, juicy peach slices, basil and arugula is sandwiched between a toasted baguette. Yields 4 servings.
Prep Time:

10 minutes

Cook Time:

8 minutes

Total Time:

18 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 ounce baguette , I used 1 Costco baguette for reference
  • salted butter
  • 2 ounces burrata, or 4 burrata balls
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • balsamic glaze
  • 6 ounces prosciutto
  • 1 large peach, pit removed (discarded) and sliced
  • honey, regular or hot honey
  • 10 basil leaves
  • 2 ounces baby arugula

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Meanwhile, trim off the ends of your baguette and slice in half lengthwise. Then cut each half horizontally to create four pieces of bread. Spread each piece generously with salted butter. Toast, butter side down, in the heated skillet over medium heat and cook until golden brown and crispy. Remove and repeat with any remaining halves until all bread is toasted.
  • Place all toasted baguette pieces toasted side up on a clean work surface. On the two bottom halves, place 2 balls of burrata each (or a proportionate amount). Slice the burrata open and gently spread the creamy interior to cover the bread. Remember to bring your burrata to room temperature beforehand for optimal spreadability.
  • Season the burrata generously with freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle with balsamic glaze, then artfully arrange slices of prosciutto over each burrata-covered half.
  • Next, add the sliced peaches evenly over the prosciutto. Drizzle with hot honey (or regular honey) for a touch of sweetness and subtle spice. Finish by scattering fresh basil leaves and baby arugula generously over the peaches and honey.
  • Carefully place the remaining toasted baguette halves on top of each assembled sandwich. Cut these two larger sandwiches in half to create four individual, perfectly portioned smaller sandwiches, and serve immediately.
