Making short and straightforward bagels has become a low-key obsession.
It started with these everything bagels, then cinnamon raisin, pumpkin spice, and most recently, jalapeño cheddar. The dough is simple and completely customizable. From sweet to savory, it’s truly only limited to the imagination.
My latest and greatest bagel creation is this French toast version. The bagel is spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, shaped into bagels and brushed with a maple and coconut sugar glaze before a short trip to the air fryer. And if that wasn’t enough, I decided to whip up a simple maple bacon cream cheese to slather on it.
To. Die. For.
Who doesn’t love a sweet and salty combo?
To Make These Air Fryer French Toast Bagels Gather:
- unbleached all-purpose flour – The base of this bagel recipe.
- baking powder – Will create lightness in the dough, which makes the bagels rise.
- cinnamon (ground) – Lends a distinct warm and woodsy flavor.
- nutmeg (ground) – Warm, aromatic with subtle hints of clove.
- fine salt – Enhances the flavors in this method.
- plain nonfat greek yogurt – Is the binder for the bagel dough.
- maple syrup – Used for sweetening and glazing the top of the bagels.
- coconut palm sugar – Used for added sweetness and texture to the top of the bagels. In a pinch use brown sugar.
- maple bacon cream cheese – Or use salted butter or regular or whipped cream cheese.
To Make The Maple Bacon Cream Cheese Gather:
- whipped cream cheese
- bacon
- maple syrup
Cook 3 to 4 strips of bacon until crispy. I’m using center cut bacon. Once crispy, drain on some paper towel then finely chop.
In a mixing bowl, add 8 ounces whipped cream cheese, the chopped bacon and 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup.
Stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
In a mixing bowl, measure and add 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour, 2-1/4 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon fine salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg.
Whisk to combine.
Add 1 cup plain nonfat greek yogurt.
Use a spatula to mix until.
Stir and shape into a ball.
Transfer the dough to a generously floured surface, then divide it into 4 equal pieces.
Roll each piece in flour. The dough is pretty sticky, so don’t be shy about needing to use more flour.
Then roll each piece into a 9 to 10-inch rope.
Connect the ends and pinch to secure.
Repeat with the remaining pieces.
In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 1 tablespoons coconut palm sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
Stir to combine.
Brush this maple mixture over the top and sides of each bagel.
Use the remaining tablespoon of coconut sugar and generously sprinkle over top of each bagel.
Preheat your air fryer to 300°.
Place the bagels in or on your air fryer insert. I’m using parchment, but only use parchment paper designed for air fryers and NEVER preheat your air fryer with parchment paper inside. Work in batches (if need be) and air fry for 12 minutes.
Remove and repeat with the remaining bagels if necessary.
Slice in half and toast!
HOW TO TOAST YOUR BAGELS IN THE AIR FRYER:
Increase the heat of your air fryer to 360°.
Swipe the cut side with butter (or if using cream cheese, lightly spray with olive oil instead or simply omit this step) and pop the two halves into your preheated air fryer. Air fry for 2 to 4 minutes or until desired toasty-ness.
Slather with butter, cream cheese or maple bacon cream cheese.
Recipe for the maple bacon cream cheese is below the bagel recipe at the end of this post.
