It is with the heaviest hearts that my husband and I share the incredibly difficult news of our beloved dog, Seamus, crossing the rainbow bridge. The decision to say goodbye to our sweet companion was a profound and heart-wrenching one, a moment of deep sorrow that has left us utterly devastated. His departure was tragically sudden and unexpected; one day Seamus was his vibrant, happy self, and the next, his health took an irreversible turn. The swiftness of his decline only amplified our grief, leaving us reeling from the shock of losing such a cherished member of our family so abruptly.

In the midst of this overwhelming wave of emotions, I find myself needing to pause, to gather my thoughts, and to commit these precious memories to paper. This act of writing is profoundly therapeutic, a way to navigate the raw pain of pet loss and to begin the healing journey. It is also an essential effort to preserve every detail of Seamus’s story, ensuring that his spirit and the countless joyful moments he brought into our lives are never forgotten. We yearn to be able to look back, to read and reread the chapters of his life, finding comfort in the narratives that shaped our family. This form of expression has proven to be an anchor in a sea of grief, for I truly believe I had never experienced true heartbreak until this moment. I have known hurt, sadness, and devastation, but this profound, physical ache in my chest – this literal heartache – is an indescribable sensation. My emotional heart yearns for the boundless, unconditional love Seamus so freely bestowed upon each of us, a love that defined his very essence.
First and foremost, it’s imperative to state that Seamus – whose name, derived from the Gaelic for James, my husband’s middle name – was far more than just “our dog” or “a dog”; he was, unequivocally, family. His presence wove itself into the very fabric of our lives, creating an unbreakable bond that transcended the typical pet-owner relationship.

Seamus – The Genesis of a Family Member
It was a truly memorable day, approximately eleven years ago, under a sky of brilliant blue and a sun that promised spring’s gentle warmth. My husband, Pat, our two young daughters – Haileigh, then six, and Malloree, a spirited three-year-old – and I embarked on a journey to Chelsea, Michigan. Our mission: to meet a litter of Brittany Spaniels, a breed chosen with careful consideration for our expanding family. While I had grown up with the loyal companionship of a Golden Retriever, Pat’s upbringing was steeped in the tradition of Brittany Spaniels. His father and brother were avid bird hunters, and the Brittany, renowned for its intelligence and hunting prowess, was their dog of choice. Thus, when the moment arrived for our family of four to welcome a new puppy, a Brittany Spaniel was the natural and unanimous decision.
The drive was filled with an almost palpable excitement. As we passed a sprawling sunflower field, its golden heads swaying gently in the breeze, we knew we were nearing the breeder’s home. The anticipation to pick the newest addition to the McNamara household was immense. For me, welcoming a puppy was a novel experience; my childhood dog had already been an adult upon my arrival. Pat, conversely, had shared his life with dogs since he was a boy. But this was our first dog together, a shared adventure, and the collective enthusiasm in the car was electrifying.
Upon arrival, the breeder’s home wasn’t the tidiest, but any fleeting concerns vanished the moment we laid eyes on the puppies. They were a whirlwind of adorable, energetic bundles, instantly capturing our full attention. The task of choosing just one from such a charming litter seemed daunting. Fortunately, three puppies were already claimed, narrowing our choice down to two delightful orange and white spotted siblings. One was an assertive, confident little fellow, bounding towards us with an undeniable charm and less orange in his markings. The other, whom the breeders affectionately called “Sad Eyes,” possessed a softer, more bashful demeanor, with a richer orange coat and a scattering of charming orange freckles across his nose.

Pat, with his hunting background, initially leaned towards the more assertive, whiter-furred puppy, seeking a bold bird dog that would thrive in the field and remain unfazed by the sound of shotguns. However, in a moment of tender consideration, he turned to me and said, “Laurie, you pick our puppy.” My heart fluttered. Me? Without a moment’s hesitation, the gentle, bashful pup with the freckled nose, ‘Sad Eyes,’ completely captured my affection. It was an instant connection. Before long, our chosen puppy, Seamus, was nestled comfortably in a box, positioned between Haileigh and Malloree in the backseat of the truck. The girls were utterly enamored with him, showering him with love despite his evident dislike for the car ride. A touch of motion sickness made the journey home a bit rocky, but he was ours, and our love for him was already immeasurable.

Seamus – A Life Full of Love and Laughter
Over the course of his magnificent eleven years, Seamus was an integral part of every facet of our family life, both the grand celebrations and the quiet, everyday moments. From vibrant kids’ birthday parties filled with joyous chaos to festive Fourth of July gatherings, adventurous hunting trips up north, and peaceful afternoon naps curled up on the couch, he was always present, always engaged. Seamus radiated happiness, a constant source of warmth and light in our home. He greeted everyone who walked through our door with his signature move: a random shoe clutched gently in his mouth, an offering he would only relinquish for the promise of a well-deserved treat. His endearing quirks made him utterly irresistible; even our diligent UPS delivery driver, a frequent visitor, would habitually leave a dog treat nestled on our packages by the front door, a testament to Seamus’s charm. Even our notoriously aloof cat, on her own capricious terms, found a strange affection for him.
His love for treats was legendary. Seamus had a particularly cunning trick: he would often feign needing to go outside, only to scratch impatiently at the door moments later, eager to re-enter for the sole purpose of receiving a coveted dog biscuit. I saw through his adorable ruse every time, but I never had the heart to let him know. It was part of his charm, a testament to his cleverness and deep affection for a good snack.

For many years, the couch was a forbidden zone, but in his later years, we finally conceded. After all, we knew he was secretly enjoying its comfort when we weren’t home or were asleep, so why deny him the pleasure? Seamus genuinely adored his designated corner of the couch. If someone dared to occupy his cherished spot and then momentarily vacated it, he would swiftly and strategically reclaim it, a comical display of his proprietary nature. This beloved spot became a symbol of his comfort and his undeniable place within our family’s core.
A small, intimate secret we shared was his occasional wink. Over the years, I would frequently catch him giving me a mischievous, knowing wink, a gesture that always melted my heart and made me wonder what playful thoughts were running through his bright, intelligent mind. It was a silent communication, a unique bond that spoke volumes.

Car rides were another source of immense joy for Seamus, especially when he was in Pat’s truck. His favorite position was with his nose eagerly poking out of the slightly cracked window, inhaling the myriad scents of the world whizzing by. The wind in his fur, the rush of new smells – these were simple pleasures that brought him profound happiness.
One of my most cherished memories involves the simple act of making air-popped popcorn. Whenever the popcorn machine whirred to life, Seamus would appear as if by magic, sitting patiently with eyes full of hopeful anticipation. He would silently, yet intensely, pray for a tossed kernel or two, a plea I could never resist. Each light, fluffy piece I shared with him was met with eager delight, a small ritual that fortified our special connection.

Seamus expertly balanced his loyalties throughout the year. From January to September, he was my devoted shadow, my constant companion in daily activities. But as autumn leaves began to fall, signaling the approach of hunting season, he transformed into Pat’s enthusiastic partner in crime. The moment Pat started loading his truck for a trip up north, Seamus would become visibly hyped, his excitement unmistakable as he anticipated the adventure. He possessed an innate love for the outdoors, a true hunter’s spirit.

His adventures with Pat included numerous trips to North Dakota, where he joined Pat, his dad, and his brother in the pursuit of pheasants. These were treasured bonding experiences, and I often reflected on how much joy they brought to both of them. And indeed, Seamus proved to be an excellent bird dog, a testament to his breed’s natural instincts and his dedication. He mastered the fields with remarkable skill and enthusiasm, making Pat incredibly proud. You’re welcome, Pat! 😉
Indoors, Seamus was my ever-present companion. He followed me everywhere, his soft padding footsteps a familiar sound. Whether I was busy cooking in the kitchen, always hoping for a stray morsel, or meticulously arranging items under my photography board for a recipe blog, he was there, patiently lying nearby. He knew, intuitively, that his close proximity would often result in a little something-something being tossed his way. It was a delightful game we played, and I always succumbed to his charming persistence, spoiling him with treats and affection.
Meal times were a communal affair, with Seamus usually positioned discreetly under the table. His hopeful eyes would scan the perimeter, ever vigilant for a dropped crumb or a forgotten morsel. He had a particular fondness for the richer human foods, his absolute favorites being succulent rotisserie chicken or a juicy piece of steak. The mere sound of a feather hitting his dog food bowl was enough to send him into a flurry of excited anticipation, a true testament to his keen hearing and insatiable appetite.
And if the aroma of sizzling bacon filled the house, Seamus would materialize at my side, standing with an air of practiced nonchalance – though it was anything but! – patiently waiting for me to drizzle a tiny bit of bacon grease onto his dry food. It’s clear, isn’t it? A central theme of Seamus’s life was his profound love for food, and his preference to always be close to us, especially when food was involved. These small indulgences were moments of pure connection, weaving him deeper into the fabric of our family.

Beyond the home and the hunting fields, Seamus also reveled in aquatic adventures. Going out on the boat with us, whether for a fishing expedition or a leisurely cruise, was a source of boundless wonder for him. Each trip felt like a new world unfolding, and the unadulterated joy radiating from his face was truly priceless, etching itself into our fondest memories.
His endearing antics extended even to our entertainment. If the girls were engrossed in a TV show and a doorbell sound effect played, Seamus would instantly spring up, darting to our front door, genuinely convinced that a visitor had arrived. He would do this multiple times in a row, each instance as hilarious as the last, reminding us of his innocent charm and unwavering watchfulness.
These recollections represent just a glimpse into the rich tapestry of memories we shared with Seamus. I’m certain many more will surface as we continue to process our loss. Indeed, I’ve often written about him in various blog posts over the years, always eager to share his unique spirit with the world.

Seamus – The Heartbreaking Farewell
Throughout his wonderful life, Seamus faced a few health scares, moments that caused us considerable anxiety: a broken shoulder that required careful healing, and a couple of mass removals that thankfully proved benign. Yet, none compared to the terrifying turn of events that unfolded this past weekend. Friday, he was utterly himself – vibrant, energetic, and joyous, embodying the happy spirit of an eleven-year-old dog. The sudden shift began on Saturday morning. I had let him outside for his usual routine, and as I turned to go back in, I heard a distressing thud. Seamus had collapsed on the back deck. A wave of instant alarm washed over me; this was undeniably abnormal. To my relief, he soon rallied, got up, and walked off into the backyard, seemingly fine. In my shock, I tried to rationalize it, convincing myself he had simply tripped or exerted himself. However, over the next twenty-four hours, his condition progressively worsened. Any flicker of excitement would trigger another collapse, his breathing became shallow and labored, his recovery time lengthened dramatically, and he began losing bodily functions, accompanied by excessive drooling. The urgency became undeniable. On Sunday, we rushed him to the veterinary emergency room, where we received the devastating diagnosis: it was most likely a severe cardiac issue, his heart failing.
To say we were devastated by this news would be a profound understatement. The realization that our beloved companion was nearing the end of his journey, despite having lived a full and cherished life, brought an unbearable sorrow. After much soul-searching and tearful discussion, we made the excruciating decision for euthanasia. This was not a choice made lightly; it was born from a deep, agonizing love and the unwavering commitment to spare him any further suffering. We wanted his final moments to be peaceful, surrounded by love, not pain. Therefore, we chose to bring him home for one last night, to hold him close, whisper our goodbyes, and simply weep as a family.
Monday morning arrived, cloaked in a profound sense of dread. Pat and I drove Seamus to our trusted vet’s office, our hearts heavy with grief, our eyes overflowing with tears. A sickening nausea churned within us, as we wrestled with the disbelief of what was happening. “I’m not ready,” I kept thinking, a desperate plea against the inevitable. But we knew this was no longer about our readiness or our wants. It was solely about Seamus’s dwindling quality of life, and the compassionate choice to end his suffering.
The entire team at Ore Creek Veterinary Office, from the vet to the vet techs, displayed immense compassion and understanding during our darkest hour. Pat carried Seamus in, and heartbreakingly, Seamus immediately suffered another collapse, a vivid and painful illustration of his failing health. It affirmed, in the cruelest way, that our decision was, indeed, the right one.
They guided us gently through each step of the process, explaining everything with sensitivity before inserting the catheter into his hind leg. With Seamus’s head cradled in my lap, Pat’s hand resting reassuringly on his side, and as they administered the final injection, I held his beloved face, gazing into his gentle eyes. Over and over, I whispered, “I love you, my sweet boy,” as he took his very last breath. It was, without a shadow of a doubt, the most profoundly difficult experience we have ever endured. Yet, amidst the crushing grief, there was an unexpected serenity in being able to hold him, to be with him as he peacefully slipped away. It was a paradox – something so devastatingly sad, yet in its raw honesty and deep love, it was also incredibly special and beautifully serene.

Seamus was truly a good dog, in every sense of the word. In fact, he was the BEST dog, a loyal and loving companion whose loss my heart can barely comprehend. Though he no longer waits at the door with a playful shoe, and his cherished corner of the couch lies empty, his favorite blanket still rests in the familiar heap he left it in, his vibrant presence permeates every corner of our home. And yes, a faint reminder of his furry self remains in the lingering dog hair – a bittersweet trace of his boundless energy. We are eternally grateful that Seamus was such a significant part of our story, an irreplaceable member of our family. He has left an indelible mark on each of our lives, bestowing upon us a treasure trove of cherished memories that we will hold dear forever. As we navigate this challenging period of pet bereavement, we know that only time, gentle and slow, can begin to heal the profound hole in our hearts.
Until we meet again, my sweet, beloved boy.

Thank you for taking the time to read our heartfelt tribute to Seamus, our extraordinary family dog.
