Essential Ingredients for Your Bang Bang Salmon Rice Bowls
Crafting these sensational bowls requires a selection of fresh, high-quality ingredients. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need and some tips for choosing the best and optimizing flavor:
For the Perfectly Seasoned Salmon:
- Salmon: Opt for a large, skinless salmon fillet, ideally about 1.5 pounds. Fresh, wild-caught salmon often has superior flavor and texture compared to farmed varieties. If buying with skin, you can easily remove it yourself with a sharp knife or ask your fishmonger to do so. Cutting it into uniform bite-sized pieces ensures even cooking and allows maximum surface area for that delicious seasoning and sauce adhesion.
- Paprika: This vibrant spice adds a beautiful reddish hue to the salmon and a subtle, earthy sweetness. For a deeper, smokier nuance, consider using smoked paprika.
- Garlic Powder: Provides a foundational aromatic flavor that is milder and sweeter than raw garlic, perfectly complementing the fish without overpowering its delicate taste.
- Kosher Salt: An indispensable ingredient for enhancing all the other flavors in the dish. Start with the recommended amount and adjust to your personal taste.
- Freshly Ground Black Pepper: Crucial for adding a subtle kick and aromatic depth. Always opt for freshly ground for the most potent flavor and aroma.
- Avocado Oil Spray: Or an extra light olive oil spray. This helps the seasoning adhere to the salmon and ensures a beautifully crispy finish, especially when air frying, without adding excessive heavy oil.
For the Signature Bang Bang Sauce:
This creamy, sweet, and spicy sauce is the heart of the dish, giving the bowls their distinctive “Bang Bang” flavor. It’s incredibly simple to make but delivers a powerful, addictive punch.
- Sweet Chili Sauce: You can use a high-quality store-bought sweet chili sauce for convenience, or try making your own homemade version for an even fresher, more customizable taste. This provides the essential sweet and tangy base with a mild chili kick.
- Mayonnaise: The creamy backbone of the sauce. Using a light mayonnaise can result in a thinner, lighter sauce, which some prefer for an easier coating. However, regular full-fat mayo will yield a richer, thicker, and more decadent sauce. Choose according to your preference and dietary needs.
- Optional Sriracha: For those who love an extra fiery kick, a teaspoon or tablespoon of sriracha can be added to the mixture. Taste and adjust the amount to achieve your desired spice level.
For Assembling Your Nutritious Rice Bowls:
The beauty of these bowls lies in their generous and colorful array of fresh vegetables and complementary components, providing both nutrition and delightful textural contrasts.
- Sticky Rice: The comforting foundation of the bowl. You can prepare your own perfectly cooked sticky rice or opt for pre-made varieties for a quicker meal. Its slightly chewy, cohesive texture is a delightful contrast to the crispy salmon and crunchy vegetables.
- Cauliflower Rice (Optional, but Highly Recommended): A fantastic addition for those looking to boost fiber, add nutrients, and reduce the overall calorie count of the meal. We highly recommend using frozen cauliflower rice for ultimate convenience; it steams quickly in the microwave. Blending it with sticky rice offers the best of both worlds – flavor and nutrition.
- Purple Cabbage: Adds a beautiful, vibrant pop of color, an excellent crunch, and a subtle peppery flavor. Finely shredding it makes it easier to eat and integrate into each bite.
- Shredded Carrot: Brings natural sweetness, an inviting orange hue, and another satisfying layer of crunchy texture to the bowls.
- Cucumber: Persian cucumbers are ideal for their crispness and wonderfully refreshing flavor. Sliced thinly, they provide a cooling element that beautifully balances the slight spice of the salmon.
- Shelled Edamame (Mukimame): A superb source of plant-based protein, adding a satisfying bite and a mild, nutty flavor. Ensure they are thawed and cooked according to package directions before adding to the bowls.
- Avocado: Sliced ripe avocado lends a luxurious creamy texture and healthy monounsaturated fats, enriching the overall mouthfeel and adding a decadent touch to the bowl.
- Yum Yum Sauce: A creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet Japanese steakhouse-style sauce that perfectly complements the Bang Bang salmon. Whether homemade or store-bought, it’s a must-have for drizzling over the finished bowls.
- Black Sesame Seeds (Optional): For an elegant garnish and a subtle nutty flavor, enhancing both the visual appeal and textural interest of your bowls.
- Cilantro: Fresh chopped cilantro provides a burst of herbaceous, bright flavor. This aromatic herb is essential for elevating the freshness of the entire dish.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Delicious Bowls
Follow these simple, clear instructions to create your own irresistible Bang Bang Salmon Rice Bowls, ensuring every component is prepared to perfection:
1. Prepare the Rice Base:
For a lighter, more fiber-rich bowl without sacrificing satisfaction, we recommend blending sticky rice with steamed cauliflower rice. Begin by cooking your sticky rice according to its package instructions. Simultaneously, steam your frozen cauliflower rice; microwave steaming is often the quickest and easiest method. Once both types of rice are cooked, gently combine them in a bowl. This fusion offers the comforting texture of sticky rice with the added nutritional benefits of cauliflower. If preferred, you can simply prepare 3-1/2 to 4 cups of cooked white sticky rice instead. Keep the prepared rice covered to retain its warmth while you continue with the salmon preparation.

2. Whisk Together the Bang Bang Sauce:
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, measure out 1/3 cup of mayonnaise and 2 to 3 tablespoons of sweet chili sauce. The exact amount of sweet chili sauce can be adjusted based on your desired level of sweetness and spice. Whisk these two ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined, smooth, and creamy. For those who enjoy a spicier kick, feel free to incorporate an additional 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of sriracha into the mixture. This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

3. Season and Prepare the Salmon:
Take 1-1/2 pounds of skinless salmon fillet and carefully cut it into uniform, bite-sized cubes, aiming for pieces approximately 1-inch in size. Transfer the cubed salmon to a separate large bowl. Season the salmon generously with 1 rounded teaspoon each of paprika and garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper. Using your hands or a mixing spoon, gently toss the salmon pieces until each one is thoroughly and evenly coated with the spice mixture. This ensures every bite is bursting with flavor.

4. Cook the Salmon to Perfection:
Preheat your air fryer or conventional oven to 400°F (200°C). Cooking salmon at a high temperature ensures a quick cook time and a beautifully crispy exterior while keeping the inside tender and flaky.
- Air Fryer Method: Once your air fryer is preheated, work in batches to avoid overcrowding the basket, which can steam the salmon instead of crisping it. Arrange the seasoned salmon pieces in a single, even layer. Lightly spray them with avocado oil or extra light olive oil. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the salmon is fully cooked through, opaque, and flakes easily with a fork. Repeat this process with any remaining salmon pieces until all are cooked to perfection.
- Oven Method: If using a conventional oven, line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil for easy cleanup. Arrange the seasoned salmon in an even layer on the prepared sheet. Lightly spray the salmon with avocado oil. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the salmon is fully cooked, opaque throughout, and flakes effortlessly.

5. Coat the Salmon in Sauce:
As each batch of salmon finishes cooking, immediately transfer the hot salmon bites into the bowl containing your prepared Bang Bang sauce. Once all the salmon has been cooked and added to the sauce, gently toss the salmon pieces until they are thoroughly and evenly coated. Be careful not to overmix, as the cooked salmon is delicate and can easily break apart. The warmth of the salmon will help the sauce adhere beautifully.

6. Assemble Your Flavorful Bowls:
Now for the exciting part – building your magnificent bowls! Divide the warm rice blend equally among four serving bowls. Artfully arrange the fresh components around the rice: add generous portions of sliced purple cabbage and cucumbers, shredded carrots, and shelled edamame. Finally, crown each bowl with beautifully sliced avocado and about 4 to 6 ounces of the delicious Bang Bang salmon. For an extra flourish and burst of freshness, sprinkle with fresh chopped cilantro, drizzle generously with Yum Yum sauce, and garnish with black sesame seeds. Serve immediately and enjoy the explosion of flavors!

Expert Tips for the Best Bang Bang Salmon Rice Bowls
- Don’t Overcook the Salmon: Salmon cooks quickly, and overcooked salmon can be dry. Keep a close eye on it, whether using an air fryer or oven, to prevent it from drying out. It should be opaque throughout and flake easily with a fork when done.
- Evenly Cut Salmon: Ensure your salmon pieces are roughly the same size for uniform cooking. This prevents some pieces from being undercooked while others are overcooked.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: Cook salmon in batches if necessary. Overcrowding reduces proper air circulation, leading to steamed rather than crispy salmon, which diminishes the desired texture.
- Taste and Adjust Sauce: Always taste your Bang Bang sauce before adding the salmon. Adjust the sweetness, spiciness, or creaminess to perfectly match your preference. A little extra sweet chili or sriracha can make a big difference!
- Prep Ahead for Ease: Most of the fresh vegetables can be prepped (sliced, shredded) a day in advance and stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator. The rice can also be cooked ahead of time. This significantly reduces active cooking time on busy weeknights, making this a truly quick meal.
- Fresh Herbs are Key: Don’t skip the fresh cilantro! It adds a bright, herbaceous, and essential flavor that ties the whole dish together and elevates its freshness.
Customization & Variations for Endless Possibilities
These Bang Bang Salmon Rice Bowls are wonderfully versatile, allowing you to experiment with ingredients to suit your taste or dietary needs. Don’t be afraid to make it your own!
- Protein Swaps: While salmon is undeniably fantastic, you can easily substitute it with air-fried chicken breast, succulent shrimp, or even pan-fried firm tofu or tempeh for a delicious vegetarian or vegan option.
- Vegetable Medley: Feel free to expand your vegetable selection! Add thinly sliced bell peppers, crisp snap peas, shredded radishes for a peppery bite, or even a handful of fresh spinach or massaged kale. You can also lightly sauté some veggies like broccoli or mushrooms if you prefer them cooked.
- Rice Alternatives: For a lower-carb option, use 100% cauliflower rice or a mix with brown rice. Quinoa is also a fantastic high-protein, gluten-free grain substitute that works beautifully.
- Extra Heat: Besides sriracha, a pinch of red pepper flakes added to the salmon seasoning or a dash of your favorite hot sauce drizzled over the finished bowl can intensify the spice in the Bang Bang sauce.
- Nutty Crunch: Toasted cashews, peanuts, or slivered almonds can add an extra layer of crunch and a delightful nutty flavor to the bowls.
Storage and Meal Prepping Made Easy
These bowls are excellent for meal prep, making healthy eating convenient throughout the week! Here’s how to store them effectively:
- Individual Components: For optimal freshness and texture, it’s best to store the cooked salmon, prepared rice, and chopped fresh vegetables in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. This allows them to stay fresh for up to 3 days. The Bang Bang sauce and Yum Yum sauce can also be stored separately in sealed containers.
- Assembled Bowls: If you prefer to assemble the bowls completely, it’s generally best to add the sliced avocado just before serving to prevent it from browning. The rest of the assembled bowl can be stored for 1-2 days.
- Reheating: When ready to eat, gently reheat the salmon and rice in the microwave or a skillet until warmed through. Then, add your fresh, cool veggies, freshly sliced avocado, and a generous drizzle of the sauces right before eating for the best experience.

Equipment

Instructions
MAKE THE RICE:
-
Cook sticky rice and blend it with steamed cauliflower rice. Doing this adds fiber and reduces the calories per serving.
NOTE: I like to use frozen (microwavable) cauliflower rice and Veetees’s sticky rice for ease. I like to keep it covered while making the salmon, just so it stays warm.
MAKE THE BANG BANG SAUCE:
-
In a large bowl, measure and add 1/3 cup mayonnaise (and more for a creamier sauce) and 2 to 3 tablespoons sweet chili sauce. Stir well to combine.
Note: For extra heat, add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon sriracha.
MAKE THE SALMON:
-
In a separate bowl, add the cubed salmon. Season with paprika, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Toss well to coat evenly.
-
Preheat your air fryer or conventional oven to 400°F (200°C).
-
Air Fry Method: Once preheated, working in batches, arrange the salmon in an even layer, spray with avocado or extra light olive oil and air-fry for 8 to 10 minutes or until fully cooked, opaque, and flakes easily. Repeat with remaining salmon pieces.
Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C), line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or foil, arrange salmon in an even layer and spray with oil. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until fully cooked, opaque, and flakes easily.
-
Transfer each batch of cooked salmon to the bowl with the bang bang sauce. Once all the salmon has been cooked, gently toss in the sauce.
BUILD YOUR BANG BANG SALMON BOWLS:
-
Divide rice among 4 bowls and add sliced cabbage and cucumbers, shredded carrots, and shelled edamame. Lastly, top with sliced avocado, about 4 to 6 ounces of the bang bang salmon. Serve topped with cilantro, a drizzle of yum yum sauce, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
Notes
Rice: I cook up sticky rice (2 cups cooked) and blend it with steamed cauliflower rice (1½ cups cooked). Doing this adds fiber and reduces the calories per serving. I like to use steamed frozen (microwavable) cauliflower rice and Veetees’s sticky rice (not sponsored) for ease, and I like to keep it covered while making the salmon so it stays warm. But room temp is fine too!
